Indoor Training
Is indoor training something that an ultrarunner should do? Running on a flat surface, like a track course or on treadmill, requires a different mindset. But if you’re going to take part in an indoor ultrarunning race (ultramarathon) like a 24-hour race, or maybe a multi-day race, indoor training is definitely a type of ultrarunning training you should consider.

Treadmill
Running on a treadmill to become a better ultrarunner? Some experienced runners say YES, while some dislike the training form. We think that it is a great way to prepare for an ultramarathon that is held indoors — it’s very race specific training! Treadmill sessions can be performed in a number of different ways, but we suggest using a heart rate monitor so that you can track your progress and get a feel for the effort you’re actually putting in. Remember — becoming a better ultrarunner is not about counting kilometers or miles, it’s about the level of effort you put in, combined with time on feet.
Track surface
When you sign up for a race that is held on a track surface, you should be aware of the fact that the impact on your body is somewhat different than what you face when running an ultra on trails or even on roads. The surface never changes, and your body takes a whole lot of more impact — concentrated to certain parts of your body — like joints, the ball of your feet and so on. Train for this so you come prepared on race day!
Make a run-walk-run schedule
It’s great to alternate between running and walking, even when you train indoors. There are practically no runners on a 24-hour race who never walk. Incorporate walking into your training and you will have a much easier time switching between running and walking on race day. One example is to run 25 minutes and then walk 5 minutes, and keep repeating this schedule.
